French doctors have found that snoring can be prevented if the heart rate is speeded up, the American New England Journal of Medicine reports. The medical research team at the University of Bordeaux were researching apnoea, a disorder which is linked to snoring. Apnoea causes the sufferer to stop breathing temporarily during sleep, they then wake up as they begin to breathe again. Because this happens hundreds of times a night, the sufferer never gets into a proper sleep pattern and is exhausted each day. The investigation involved 15 patients and it was found that those fitted with pacemakers snored much less than those without. The pacemaker increases heartbeat when it drops to low levels, this in turns reduces breathing problems.
